The challenge

The project presented significant challenges due to the sheer scale of the structure – some elevations extending more than 200 metres in length – as well as limited access around the site.

Working in a busy city centre environment also demanded careful planning to capture accurate data without disrupting pedestrian flow, traffic, or ongoing retail operations.

The solution

To overcome these constraints, we adopted a measured approach using long-range laser scanning combined with targeted total station observations. This allowed us to capture large elevations efficiently and accurately from restricted vantage points, stitching multiple high-resolution scans together to form continuous, reliable data.

For the roof plan, we used elevated scanning positions and controlled station setups to record all roof features, edges, plant installations, and levels despite limited physical access. This workflow ensured full coverage of the building while maintaining precision across long distances.

The outcome

The client received a complete set of CAD drawings, including fully detailed elevations and an accurate roof plan suitable for design, planning, and maintenance purposes.

Our controlled scanning strategy provided a clear representation of the entire building envelope, despite the operational and access challenges on site.

These deliverables gave the client a dependable foundation for future redevelopment and asset management decisions, supporting long-term planning for one of Nottingham’s key commercial hubs.
