The challenge

Surveying within an active professional sports stadium presented several logistical challenges, including working around staff, scheduled activities, and restricted access zones.

The size and complexity of the stands, with multiple tiers, varying structural forms, and extensive internal circulation routes, meant that precision and careful planning were essential.

The solution

To meet the client’s requirements, we used a combination of laser scanning and traditional surveying techniques to capture the geometry of the stands and internal layouts with a high level of accuracy.

The stands were scanned from multiple positions to ensure full coverage of seating tiers, concourses, structural elements, and circulation routes. Internally, floor plans were produced using detailed scan data from controlled station setups, allowing us to record the varying floor levels and complex internal arrangements typical of large stadium structures.

All work was scheduled to avoid operational disruption and was coordinated with stadium staff to maintain safety and access control.

The outcome

The client received a clear and comprehensive set of drawings, including precise cross-sections through the stands and clean, fully annotated floor plans. These deliverables provided valuable insight into the stadium’s existing structure and internal layout, supporting both planning and design considerations.

By delivering accurate, high-quality data while working efficiently within a busy professional sports venue, the project gave the Leicester Tigers organisation a reliable foundation for future improvements and facility development at Welford Road Stadium.
